Maths at King Ina Academy
Our vision for mathematics
At King Ina Academy, we want every child to become a confident mathematician who understands the mathematics they are learning, can explain their thinking and can use their knowledge to solve problems.
We believe that all children can succeed in mathematics. Our maths curriculum focuses on developing fluency, reasoning and problem solving, while building the secure knowledge and skills children need for future learning.
We want maths to be engaging, purposeful and enjoyable, with children encouraged to explore ideas, make connections, talk about their thinking and develop their confidence as mathematicians.
Our approach to maths
We use White Rose Maths as the foundation for our mathematics curriculum. Our teachers use this carefully planned progression alongside their own professional judgement, adapting lessons and activities to meet the needs of the children in their class. This ensures that all children are appropriately supported, challenged and encouraged to develop a deep and lasting understanding of mathematics. White Rose Maths is built around three key areas: fluency, reasoning and problem solving, which work together to develop confident and capable mathematicians.
Fluency
Children develop secure knowledge of number facts, calculation methods and mathematical vocabulary.
Reasoning
Children explain how and why they have reached an answer and learn to justify their thinking.
Problem solving
Children apply their mathematical knowledge to different situations and unfamiliar problems.
