Reading for Pleasure

Reading for Pleasure at King Ina C of E Academy

At King Ina C of E Academy, we recognise the importance of Reading for Pleasure and are passionate about fostering a lifelong love of books and reading in all our children. We provide a wide range of exciting opportunities and experiences to bring stories to life, celebrate authors and inspire our pupils to become enthusiastic, confident readers.

We promote Reading for Pleasure throughout the school through a variety of events, activities and initiatives:
  • Extreme Reading Challenge – encouraging children to share their love of reading in fun and unusual places.
  • Roald Dahl Day – celebrating the much-loved author and his wonderful stories.
  • World Book Day – dressing up as favourite book characters and celebrating the magic of books.
  • Story Go-Rounds – teachers read stories to different classes, sharing their love of books and introducing children to new authors and stories.
  • Peer Reading – older pupils read with younger children, building relationships and nurturing a love of reading across the school.
  • Michael Rosen Day – celebrating the work of this much-loved poet and author and inspiring children through poetry, performance and storytelling.
  • World Nursery Rhyme Week – our youngest children in Owlets and Reception enjoy celebrating nursery rhymes, developing their language, listening skills and love of rhyme and rhythm.
  • Whole-School Reading Project – last year, we introduced a whole-school reading project based on the beautiful wordless picture book Journey by Aaron Becker. This imaginative story inspired children across the school to explore storytelling through illustrations, develop their creativity and use their imaginations. Sharing a common text brought pupils together and demonstrated how stories can be interpreted and enjoyed in different ways.
  • Visiting Authors – we are fortunate to welcome a range of authors into school, giving children the opportunity to meet the people behind the books, discover new stories and feel inspired to read and write for themselves.
  • Links with Somerton Library – we value our partnership with Somerton Library, an important resource within our local community. These links help us to promote reading beyond the classroom and encourage families to make the most of their local library.
  • PTFA Support – we are grateful to our PTFA for purchasing books for our Accelerated Reader programme, helping to ensure that children have access to engaging and appropriate reading material.
  • Author Focus – we introduce pupils to a variety of authors, genres and writing styles, broadening their reading experiences and encouraging them to discover new favourites.
  • Reading for Pleasure Books to Share at Home – our EYFS and KS1 pupils take home a Reading for Pleasure book to enjoy with their families.
